PURPOSE: To quicken your feet.
SPACE NEEDED: 15 feet or more
EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Ball, glove
NO. PERSONS REQUIRED: You and a partner (can also be done by yourself)
AREAS OF CONCENTRATION:
1. Correct receiving position with runners on base.
2. Weight on balls of feet.
3. Right foot instep facing second base on first step.
4. Momentum started as ball reaches plate area.
EXECUTION:
1. Assume correct receiving position with runners on base.
2. In slow motion and in parts, you will execute each movement.
3. Without ball thrown, pretend the ball is within 6-8 inches of either side of the plate.
4. Lean body toward second base for momentum as if the runner is stealing.
5. Slap bare hand in glove to simulate ball hitting the mitt.
6. Take your right foot and jab step no more than 12 inches toward second base. Freeze to make sure your instep is facing second base and that you have not raised up too high (to maintain proper throwing posture and not hinder umpire's vision).
7. After you have broken down each movement, quicken the movements until you get to the point to have a partner throw you a ball to allow you to make each movement in continuous motion.
8. Repeat the same procedures as above but work on balls to the left side of the plate by leading with the left foot toward the shortstop when catching the ball and popping around the corner with both feet underneath your body. Make sure your front shoulder is on the target.
