Fielding 1-2

Your last two steps are not 1-2 Field. Remember, the last two steps are the most important. Approaching a routine ground ball off your glove-hand shoulder, your throwing-hand foot goes straight ahead, as your back starts to go down toward your thigh. Your glove-hand foot goes to the side, twice the width of your shoulders, aligned heel to toe with the glove foot forward. When your glove-hand foot hits the ground, your back should be flat and your glove should be on the ground.
1-2 Field Drill
PURPOSE: To ensure proper fielding position and smoothness.
SPACE NEEDED: 25 feet
EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Ball and glove
NO. PERSONS REQUIRED: You and a wall; or you and a partner

AREAS OF CONCENTRATION:
1. Proper footwork.
2. Stay low on approach.
3. Make sure in the first step of the 1-2 Field movement that the back starts to get flat by making the chest come down to the thigh.
4. Concentrate on the hands being extended.

EXECUTION:
1. Ball is rolled moderately either by throwing the ball off the wall or rolled by a partner.
2. As the ball is rolled or hits the wall, you make the 1-2 Field movements before the ball is 10-15 feet away from you.
3. When you catch the ball, freeze. Do not cradle in so that you can check your fielding position and especially your glove hand extension.
