CYC JUNIOR GOLF 2009
St. Catherine Laboure Parish
Program Statement
St. Catherine Laboure Parish is initiating a junior golf program for the 5th thru 8th grade youth of St. Catherine Laboure. Players will be introduced to the sport of golf with the hope that a life long interest will be built. Each player will learn the basic rules of golf, receive instruction on golf etiquette, be instructed on proper stroke and play by local USGA teaching pros, and participate in tournament play at the Par 3 public courses Tower Tee (Affton) and Riverside Golf Course (Fenton).
Next year, we will introduce an instructional league (intramural league) for the 2nd thru 4th grade youth of St. Catherine Laboure.
Number of Accepted
This program will accept on a first come first served, the first 48 (boys and girls combined) to register online at the St. Catherine website. There will be no exception this year as there is limited space at the driving ranges and the selected golf courses.
District
St. Catherine Laboure will participate this year with other parishes from the south county district of the CYC. These will include Assumption, Queen of All Saints, St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Joseph – Imperial.
Parent Participation
In keeping with the St. Catherine Laboure parish family participation philosophy, each family will be required to volunteer for each event throughout the season. There will be many responsibilities at each instructional session and each tournament. Golf tournaments require many volunteers from scorekeepers to marshals to starters to check in responsibilities. Adults will be required to walk with each foursome on each course. Without the volunteers, the events will not be possible.
Therefore as a requirement of sign up, each family will be required to acknowledge this participation. Families that do not meet their obligations, harm the program. Players will be removed from the program if the family obligations are not met.
We will assign age group and gender coordinators to be responsible for that particular group at each event. This is only a coordinator, not a coach or babysitter. They will be expected to get kids ready for practices and tournaments.
Tournament Spectators
Spectators will be allowed to follow players but will be asked to abide by golf etiquette rules. Unruly behavior will result in being asked to leave the golf course.
Parent/Player Orientation Semimar
A parent/player seminar will be held at SCL prior to the season to be introduced to the new SCL golf program. This is a mandatory requirement. A date will be given as soon as possible. A second night will be held if needed.
The program will be reviewed that night as well as a review of golf terms and terminology and the rules and instructions for all of the events. Scoring will be reviewed.
A review of golf etiquette ad the golf attire requirement will also be given.
Etiquette Class
At the first instructional night, a brief etiquette class will be given to explain the rules and etiquette of golf as well as the rules of the driving range. We will also review some golf course rules, additional golf terms, and remind the players of safety and caution.
All players will be required to pay attention. Listen to all rules. No horseplaying will be accepted. Children that disobey and show disregard with the rules will be removed from the program.
Events
Each player will participate in a maximum of five (5) one and a half hour instructional classes at Tower Tee Driving Range on Heege Road. We anticipate a ratio of approximately 1 teaching pro per 10 players. In addition, coaches from St. Catherine Laboure will mix in with the pros. Each player will receive direction on hitting tee shots, irons, chipping around the green, sand trap play, and putting.

Foursomes will include a 5th grader, a 6th grader, a 7th grader and an 8th grader and may not all be from the same parish. Each player plays his own ball and registers his own score. All foursomes for the tournaments will be blended to have players of all ability playing together to help and encourage each other. Remember, each player is playing his or her own ball.
Equipment
Each player will be required to have their own set of clubs and bag. A minimum number of 4 clubs will be required. Standard sets contain a light weight golf bag, a driver, 2 irons and a putter. Each player will be required to carry their own bag. No sharing bags. Players will not be allowed to borrow clubs from others on the golf course. Players are encouraged to use their own set at the instructional nights to become more familiar and comfortable with their own clubs.
During tournament play, all players shall be required to have their own golf gloves, balls, tees, ball markers, club cleaners, and towels.
